J.de Telmont Champagne Information
On the banks of the Marne river, 5 kilometres from Epernay, the capital of the Champagne region, the Damery vineyards cover more than 200 hectares of land, officially authorised to produce this famed beverage and to bear the Champagne appellation.
The hills slope gently towards the south and south-east, ideally exposed to the sunshine, enhancing the grapes taste and fragrance.
Champagne J.de Telmont is one of the last family run houses in Champagne. The Lhopital family continues to manage the estate with one single objective, to perpetuate the tradition of the house, the only true guarantee of a Champagne of unwavering quality.
J.de Telmont History
In 1918 Henri Lhopital decided to sell his products on the open market. He was one of Champagnes first pioneers to become a 'manipulant' having previously just been a grower.
In 1945 a new era began with Henri's son Andre at the helm. Andre increased the size of their vineyard by acquiring land covered by the appellation which had been abandoned since the Champagne crisis of 1929. The family enjoyed constant increases in sales and they registered the brand 'J.de Telmont' in 1949.
In 1956 Andre's son Serge followed in his fathers and grandfathers footsteps. The family again increased the size of their property in 1956 and again in 1968. They were truly making their mark in the Champagne region and becoming a well respected house with a long family tradition.
The house now boasts several generations of the Lhopital family.

Tasting Notes (From the LHopital family)
Appearance
Colour and Impression:
Golden straw-coloured, dazzlingly clean and crystalline and glinting with delicate flashes of copper, like a priceless work of art created by man and nature with no thought for expense.
Bubbles:
Elegant, expansive and lively mousse born of swirling, graceful bubbles that dance with light-hearted abandon.
Ring:
Intense, intact and enduring; a twinkling ring glowing with frivolity.
Nose
Initial bouquet:
Clean, simple and spring-like, opening on bursts of errant, freshly rustic scents composed of little wild flowers (columbines, buttercups, meadowsweet), grasses (wild oats and corn shoots) and bitter almonds that evoke the reawakening of nature.
When the glass is swirled:
The aromas wend their errant way in an atmosphere filled with vegetable scents of humus wet with dew while indulgently sunny notes of fresh fruit (Chasselas grapes, greengages, pineapple and grapefruit) display a 'heady' depth of concentration that turns each instant into a moment of pure pleasure.
Closing bouquet, when the wine has warmed slightly:
The aromatic melody is joined by soft fragrances of freshly baked crusty bread and the light nuttiness of fresh butter.
Palate
Attack:
Very lively and fresh with softer, more refined rustic notes that in between the nose and the palate seem to have acquired the characteristics of a dry bouquet. The palate remains on the wild side, presenting warm and pretty touches of wild blackberries and violets, green oaks and juniper berries.
Body:
A wonderfully bracing lightness takes the palate rather by surprise and precedes a texture of delicate smoothness as the cushiony mousse joins with a cortege of sweet, expansive fruit flavours (poached pears, plums cooked in wine with cinnamon, dried figs, sultanas and crystallised fruits) to heighten the sense of pleasure.
Finish:
Punctuated by flavours of patisserie (marzipan and vanilla) and the nuttiness of chestnuts and walnuts. Simply delicious.
Wine and Meal
White meat and seafood

Tasting Notes (From the LHopital family)
Appearance
Colour and Impression:
pale straw-gold with a brilliant crystalline radiance that shimmers with warm amber hues and the occasional dazzling glint of green
Bubbles:
fine, light and exuberant, producing and endless stream of lively, delicate mousse
Ring:
wafer thin, with good consistency and lasting persistence.
Nose
Initial bouquet:
elegant, thoroughbred and astonishingly complex. Fleeting but charming nuances of newly-blossomed flowers - hyacinth, peony and violet - mingle with more pronounced but equally seductive scents of herbaceous elements and dried flowers. The bouquet includes broom and grasses, carnations and gillyflowers plus the merest trace of oak, which is still very restrained at this stage.
When the glass is swirled:
the range of aromas rapidly changes register as the floral fragrances give way to discreet hints of red berries - raspberry, red currant and wild blackberry - and mouth-watering aromas of baking finger biscuits and sponge cake.
Closing bouquet, when the wine has warmed slightly:
the nose becomes even more inviting with the arrival of delightfully sensual, slender, almost wickedly tempting notes of spice - vanilla and sweet liquorice - that come spiralling through the air alongside tangy citrus notes of pink grapefruit zest and mandarins.
Palate
Attack:
brisk, supple and smooth, with that distinctive fruitiness and vinosity that come from the proportion of Pinots in the blend. Clearly a well-crafted palate. Round but succulent, fine and lively, with a velvety mouthfeel that increases taste-bud stimulation. The red-berry flavours previously noticed are now more intense, becoming more like a coulis than freshly picked fruit.
Body:
the Chardonnay in the blend soon works its magic, adding an eloquent charm that is heightened by a positive explosion of luscious flavour sensations. The endless stream of soft, silky mousse seems to sparkle with every flavour imaginable, whether empyreuma (toast and lightly roasted mandarin peel), spice (vanilla and sweet liquorice) or flowers (wild violets). As it unfurls, this stunning range of fragrances adds lightness and balance.
Finish:
suave, pleasant and already fairly long, but with that hint of firmness that promises good ageing potential. Tends more towards herbaceous characteristics for the time being, with a refreshing, even lemony tang of basil and verbena.
Wine and Meal
A Champagne of distinctive vintage character that is the perfect accompaniment to gourmet cuisine. It has a wonderful crispness, with good fruity substance, palpable roundness and real harmony, that seems to invite culinary adventures.
Plain, cooked duck foie gras
Grilled gilt-head bream with crystallised lemon
Wing of free-range guinea fowl with crystallised shallots, girolles mushrooms and other seasonal fungi.
Chicken in a parsley sauce
Tiramisu with lemon liqueur and white peaches.
Grande Rose Brut
Presented in the same clear bottle as the one in which it matured, this fine Rose Champagne shows to full advantage the charm and subtlety of it's colour. This Champagne is the result of a strict selection of Black Pinot grapes, ripened to perfection, and chosen and stalked with the utmost care.
This delightfully fruity Champagne of great elegance, with its wonderful bouquet is ideal as an aperitif, for candlelit parties and romantic gifts.

Tasting Notes (From the LHopital family)
Appearance
Colour and Impression:
Raspberry pink, radiantly delicate and limpid, twinkling with salmon highlights; a dreamy invitation that is delight to behold.
Bubbles:
Creamy, rapid and persistent mousse, created by a cascade of tiny, lively bubbles whose nostalgic wanderings bring a touch of magic to each moment.
Ring:
Lamella, regular and long lasting; a sumptuous necklace of fine pearls around a neck of pleasure.
Nose
Initial bouquet:
Rich and very appealing, the essence of finesse, like the calm before the 'storm' of taste to come; a heaven of serenity gradually releasing armfuls of floral fragrances (zinnia, dwarf dahlias, hyacinth, hollyhocks, carnations and orange blossom) whose elegantly suave sensuality is the unmistakable mark of a quintessentially rounded wine.
When the glass is swirled:
Once the introductions are over, the wine relaxes and becomes much more communicative. It opens a generous bouquet of slightly sharp little red berries (redcurrants, raspberries, strawberries) that combine with a rhubarb fragrance to create a mood of nervousness.
Closing bouquet, when the wine has warmed slightly:
Fairly powerful fragrances of litchis and creme de cassis together with a amylic nuances of boiled sweets serve to soften an ensemble that is rich with promise.
Palate
Attack:
The wine is tender and vinous but in no way timid, flirting with exuberance and preferring immediate gratification over finesse, emotion over complexity. The aromatic register develops delicious scents of blackcurrant, blackberry and blueberry jam with a succulent foundation of plums and preserved orange that give the wine even greater volume.
Body:
The predominant characteristic is suavity. The wine is velvety in texture, with a melt-in-the-mouth mousse, discreet astringency and clear breeding. Refreshing scents of moss and box develop with a lively, fleshly and pleasantly juicy space born of flavours of vanilla, liquorice, morello cherries and prunes.
Finish:
Exquisite and long tasting, combining precious floral notes of wild violets and irises with a sharp touch of pink grapefruit that adds pleasing freshness at the close.
